Do Collagen Supplements Actually Work? An Honest 2026 Update

I first wrote about collagen supplements back in 2020, when the evidence was thin and I was — politely — a skeptic. Half a decade and a great many clinical trials later, the picture has shifted slightly. So here's an honest update: what the newest evidence really shows, where the hype still outruns it, and whether that daily scoop is worth your money.

Changing your mind when the evidence changes is supposed to be the whole point of being an evidence-led doctor — even if the internet treats it as a character flaw. So let me practise what I preach.

Back in 2020 I wrote a fairly cool-headed, faintly unimpressed piece about collagen supplements (you can read the original here). The gist was: the evidence is thin, save your money. It was a reasonable read of the science at the time. But the science has moved — there are now dozens more trials where there were once a handful — and the answer in 2026 is a little more interesting and positive. It still continues to be more nuanced than either the supplement industry or its loudest critics will tell you.

Let's get into it.

The old dismissal doesn't quite hold anymore

For years, the killer line against collagen supplements was elegant and satisfying: "You just digest it." The argument went that swallowing collagen is no different from eating a steak — your gut breaks it into amino acids, your body puts them wherever it likes, and the idea that drinking collagen sends collagen to your face is biological nonsense.

It's is a reasonable critique. It's also too simple. Newer absorption studies have shown that hydrolysed collagen isn't only broken down into individual amino acids — a meaningful fraction is absorbed intact as small bioactive peptides (the most famous being prolyl-hydroxyproline), which turn up measurably in the bloodstream after you drink it. This is a unique breakdown product, as I discussed in my previous article. And there's plausible laboratory evidence that these little peptides can act as signals — effectively nudging your fibroblasts (the skin's collagen-making cells) to get busy, as well as supplying raw material.

So the mechanism is genuinely plausible, and this is something I went through in my original article six years ago. But — and this is the pivot the whole article turns on — plausible mechanism is not the same as proven benefit. A molecule being absorbed tells you it could do something. Whether it actually makes your skin better is a question only clinical trials can answer. And that's where it gets messy.

What the trials show — and the catch

Here's the genuinely encouraging bit. Multiple randomised controlled trials, and several meta-analyses pooling them, have reported real improvements in skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkle appearance after around 8–12 weeks of taking hydrolysed collagen peptides. On paper, that's a far stronger evidence base than existed when I first wrote about this, and it's why you'll see confident "science-backed!" claims on every tub.

Now the catch, and it's a big one. When researchers look critically at those trials, two problems keep surfacing.

First, funding. The large majority of the positive studies were funded by the companies selling the product. That doesn't make them fraudulent or bad studies, but it is an obvious source of bias we need to be aware of. A 2025 systematic review found that the trials showing benefit tended to be the lower-quality, industry-sponsored ones — while the higher-quality, independently funded studies largely failed to show the same effect.

Second, the supplement is rarely just collagen. Most of those glossy trials test a proprietary blend — collagen plus vitamin C, biotin, hyaluronic acid, zinc, sometimes antioxidants. Vitamin C alone is essential for your own collagen synthesis. So when the blend "works," you genuinely cannot say whether it was the collagen or the well-known cofactors riding along with it. It's like praising a cake for its flour while ignoring the sugar, eggs and butter.

Put those together and the fair 2026 verdict is: the evidence has grown a lot, and it's suggestive — but the strongest, cleanest studies are the least impressed, and the most impressive studies are the least clean. That's not "it definitely works." It's also not "it definitely doesn't." It's a genuine, uncomfortable “maybe it does work?”

What about joints and bones?

Worth a mention, because it's often the better argument for collagen than skin. Here too the evidence is mixed and mostly modest — some trials suggest hydrolysed collagen may ease osteoarthritis joint pain and there's a little signal for bone density in post-menopausal women — but again, much of it is low-quality or industry-linked, and independent reviews are cautious. Promising, not proven. (If your joints are the issue, that's a conversation with your GP, not a wellness tub.)

So, should you take it?

Here's where I land, and it's deliberately un-dramatic.

Collagen supplements are not snake oil — the mechanism is real enough and the safety profile is excellent (they're basically a purified protein; the main downsides are your wallet and the occasional bit of bloating). But they are also not the transformative skin fix the marketing sells, and if the entirety of your anti-ageing budget goes into a collagen tub while you skip sunscreen, you've been sold the garnish instead of the meal.

If you want to try it — and plenty of my patients do, happily — a few honest pointers:

Choose a single-ingredient hydrolysed collagen peptide (10g-ish a day is the common trial dose) if you actually want to know whether collagen is doing anything, rather than a kitchen-sink blend where you'll never be able to tell. Or, alternatively, getting the benefit from a blend of ingredients alongside collagen is perfectly acceptable to do too! Give it a proper 8–12 weeks, because nothing here works overnight. Keep your expectations at "possible modest improvement in skin hydration and bounce," not "new face." And know that a protein-adequate diet already supplies your body with the amino-acid building blocks — so if you eat well, the marginal benefit may be smaller still.

What definitely works (spend here first)

I can't write a collagen update without the reality check, because this is where the actual results live. If you care about your skin ageing well, the interventions with the strongest evidence are boringly familiar and mostly cheaper than a premium collagen habit: daily broad-spectrum sunscreen (the single most effective anti-ageing product that exists), a retinoid, not smoking, enough protein, vitamin-C-rich food, and decent sleep. Do those first.

A collagen scoop is a reasonable cherry on top of a solid routine — never a substitute for one.

The bottom line

In 2020 I told you collagen supplements probably weren't worth it, and the evidence then supported that. In 2026 I'll give you the updated, honest version: the science has genuinely improved, the mechanism is more credible than the old "you just digest it" line allowed, and there's a real — if soft, and heavily industry-tinted — signal that they may modestly help skin hydration and elasticity. That's a more generous verdict than I gave five years ago. It is still a long way from the miracle on the label.

Take it if you like it and can afford it, but keep your expectations realistic… and put your sunscreen on first. That advice hasn't changed a bit.
